How I’m mapping my next 2 years (the trick that got me unstuck)

Recently, I felt lost with what I wanted to do.
I’ve been working self-employed as a coach for 11+ years, and I get the odd period of “grey… like I’ve lost direction.”

I was struggling to understand what my day-to-day needs to look like in order to achieve the things I want in the future.

I think a lot of people feel this way for too long and don’t act on it.

So I did an exercise that has helped a LOT:

I worked backwards from where I want to be in two years to make it easier to visualise what I need to do daily.

I never normally share my personal goals, but honestly, I have nothing to hide anymore. Plus, this email might be the rocket up my backside I need now that I’ve shared it here with over 2,000 people.

Here’s the exact breakdown:

  • 2 years: I want to be helping 200+ parents become the best version of themselves, laying the best foundations for their kids. (through various programmes)
  • 1 year: I need to be working with 100 people and be the go-to guy for parents who want to thrive.
  • 6 months: I need to be working with 50 people, and have built the full course that offers solutions to every problem parents of young families face.
  • 3 months: I need 25 clients (though I’m already ahead of this), and each day I need to be jotting down the problems my clients face and building out the resources.
  • 1 month: Every spare bit of energy goes to building a programme parents recommend to other parents. (There are more details in my goals, but that would bore you, so I won’t include them.)

That’s an example of how I’m going to build this.
Why not try the same with your goals?

Where do you want to be in 2 years?

Where do you need to be in 1 year?

Where do you need to be in 6 months?

Where do you need to be in 3 months?

Where do you need to be in 1 month?

Now go through and work out what you need to do to achieve it. It works wonders when you work backwards!

If you do this, I’d love to hear about it—and help you refine things.

I did a 25km trail race in the Lakes a couple of weeks ago. Rated 5 out of 5 for difficulty. I'd only run about 60km the entire year before it. I sounds nuts but I did it for two reasons. The first is I want my kids to grow up thinking this stuff is normal. Training, pushing yourself, eating well, not drinking every weekend. Most people weren't brought up that way and for a lot of people exercise is just weird. I don't want that for my kids. I want them to see their dad doing hard things and...

Laura (my girlfriend) went vegan for a whole year once. She didn't watch a documentary or have some big moment about animals. (although she loves them) She just spent loads of time around one of my best mates who is vegan and it slowly rubbed off on her. She's not vegan anymore by the way. But it shows how much the people around you shape what you do without you noticing. If you're around caring people you end up more caring, and if you're around fit people you suddenly want to have a go...

I've not sent an email for a few weeks and I've done a 'classic'.. The longer I left it the more I got in my own head. I kept thinking 'what do I even send for the first one back', then 'it's been too long', then 'the first one back had to be a really good one'. The more I thought about it the less I did. It's not that I didn't want to send them. I love writing these. I just overthought it, got distracted and spent the time on something else instead. And it's exactly what most people do with...
